The Self-Editor’s Checklist

A sheet music self-publisher has to wear many hats. One of those hats is that of Editor.

Editing your own music isn't the most fun part of the self-publishing process, but it is one of the more important things to consider before clicking the 'Publish' button! Your job is to make sure your score and parts contain all of the correct and detailed information that leads to a great performance. Everything from dynamic markings to including the correct copyright notice at the bottom of the title page is your responsibility to include. As a self-publisher, acting as your own editor can feel like a daunting task, but it also ensures that your music goes out to the world exactly the way you intend.

Whether you’re just starting out or you consider yourself a seasoned pro, editing is one of the most detail-oriented parts of the job, which is why we’ve put together the checklist below based on industry-standard music editing best practices to help make the process a little easier.

Download and use this printable list to check your work as you take the final steps toward making your music available to the world!
